  1. To use unicode characters in xterm: LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 xterm

And to test, cat the following file: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs/examples/UTF-8-demo.txt
If you want the default xterm in X11.app to have the same property (along with a larger window size):
    defaults write org.x.X11 app_to_run "LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 /usr/X11/bin/xterm -geometry 120x50+5+5"
    If you have XQuartz: org.macosforge.xquartz.X11

  2. How to install gitk (without fink or homebrew):
    - Download the latest version from github.com/git/git/blob/master/gitk-git/gitk
    - Make it executable.
    - Modify the third line to read: exec /usr/bin/wish "$0" -- "$@"
    - Copy to somewhere on your path, say /usr/local/bin/

  3. Get rid of bad application warnings:
    xattr -d com.apple.quarantine [appname].app

  4. Setup the webserver in OSX 10.9 or later: See OSXWebServerSetup
  5. Export emlx files from Apple Mail to Thunderbird: See AppleMailToThunderbird
  6. Extract .pkg files without extracting them: pkgutil --expand package.pkg /path/to/extract_dirname
  7. Adjust screen brightness from the command line: Use the code available here.
